About

I created this blog as a way to share information, keep track of ideas, and inspire others to create small-scale live/work structures.

Here are a few guiding principles for this project.

  • “Affordable Housing” is only one side of the coin. Sustainable development needs to include a path to economic improvement.
  • There’s a storied tradition (think HP, Microsoft, Apple) of entrepreneurs starting their businesses out of basements and garages. Let’s look at ways we can build new businesses and economies through buildings that encourage mixed-use activities.
  • Sustainable building design should maximize the use of a structure - this means designing homes that fit the needs of families as they grow and contract.
  • Good design can overcome space constraints: Small and efficient beats large and wasteful every time.
  • Urban infill can be done better. Build in a way that creates community while respecting your neighborhood.
