Woodstoves: Design Flair

Here’s a great line of European woodstoves: RAIS

RAIS Malta

It looks like it’s available through local dealer Ecohause. According to the website, their stoves are so efficient that they are “carbon neutral” - meaning that burning the wood releases the same amount of CO2 as would be released by the tree as it decomposes. They’re highly efficeint too - about 77% efficiency (compare to fireplaces, which are 10% efficient). They’re not cheap, however: $3500-$7500! There’s another distributor of similar stoves in NewYork

Here are some other interesting options, found at this website:

I’m not sure where to find these…I originally saw this stove in an issue of Dwell (Dec/Jan 2007) used by designer Michael P. Johnson, based in Arizona. I *think* this is his website: www.mpjstudio.com

Update:

I found a north American provider that sells an interesting design. It’s from a company called “Pacific Energy” and the model is the Fusion Stove. It’s relatively well-designed, yet larger than European models and can accept “normal” sized logs. One of the disadvantages of the European models is that the firebox is small (14″) in the longest dimension. Not quite as efficient as European models (69% efficient/3.4g per hour emissions) The Fusion has a full-sized firebox and looks great.

You can find a dealer in Portland for Pacific Energy. Dealers include:

Here’s another local manufacturer (The Zephyr, made in Salem):

Zephyr 2.0

One of the better North American designs I’ve seen. It’s got a full-sized firebox, which is nice, and a super-big front window. Cost is around $1700. It’s not nearly as efficient at the European models (4.3 g/hr of emissions…not sure of the efficiency, but if it puts out more emissions than the Fusion stove above (3.4g/69% efficient) then is must be lower than 69%). It looks like you can get it locally:

Update #2

I found another manufacturer, available locally: Scan Stoves These are a bit more affordable than the Rais line, though not quite as well-designed. These stoves are efficient and emit only 3.97 g/hr. Cost is around $2000.

Scan Model 60

Update #3

Raina’s brother Graham recommended a stove by the European firm Morso. Their designs are elegant, though they are a bit less efficient than other models (The model 8140 is 4.5 g/hr). Several dealers can be located in the Portland area.
